11 December 2015

Happy International Mountain Day 2015!

Today we honour mountains and mountain peoples all over the world. The United Nations General Assembly has designated 11 December, from 2003 onwards, as “International Mountain Day”. It is observed every year and FAO is the UN coordinating agency for the preparation of this annual celebration.

Promoting mountain products for better livelihoods is this year’s theme for the annual observance. Mountain producers can boost their local economies by selling – and in some cases improving the marketing of – their high quality products, such as coffee, cocoa, honey, herbs, spices and handicrafts, on global markets.

All information tools, including a poster, a fact sheet, the IMD logo in all the official UN languages, as well as information on the events taking place around the world, are available on the International Mountain Day  website.

And do not forget to send news and pictures of the events your organizations and institutions hold, contacting sara.manuelli@fao.org.
