THE EXPERIENCE OF STIFTER + BACHMANN IN ALTO ADIGE

The series of meetings entitled Architects and Territories aims to highlight the work of professional firms working in different countries, mainly in Alpine contexts, by presenting their work and examining the relationships between their architectural projects and the territory.

The first meeting is dedicated to Alto Adige, a geographical area that has for decades accepted and recognized the importance of contemporary architecture in reorganizing the territory, promoting innovation, and involving the public, both residents and tourists. The studio of Stifter and Bachmann, founded by Helmut Stifter (Lutago, 1968) and Angelika Bachmann (Brunico, 1967), will be presented as an example of a studio working in Alto Adige. Established in 1999 in Falzes (BZ) in Val Pusteria, the studio has designed several buildings in the area and worked with both private and public clients. In the last three years, they have completed several important urban and extra-urban projects. For example, the expansion of the alberghiera high school in Merano; the new gym in Brunico, a building that has become a sort of territorial landmark; and the recent refuge at Sasso Nero in Valle Aurina (3,026 meters above sea level).

Architects and Territories is an initiative of the Courmayeur Mont Blanc Foundation and the Order of Architects, Planners, Landscapers and Conservators of the Valle d’Aosta Autonomous Region, and was started and is curated by Francesca Chiorino and Marco Mulazzani. The Architects and Territories meetings are held in the castles of the Valle d’Aosta, with the aim of establishing a dialogue between contemporary architecture and the historical places that play a central role in the history and landscape of the region.
