The EUSALP Annual Forum will be held on 14th/15th December in Nice at the conclusion of the French Presidency, with the participation of the UNIMONT Centre of the University of Milan. The Edolo Hub will intervene in the round table “The ecological transition to face climate change: EUSALP in action for a sustainable and resilient Alpine region” with a contribution relating to the enhancement of mountain plant agro-biodiversity and, in consideration of the coordination role of the EUSALP Action Group 1 – Research & Innovation as delegated by the Lombardy Region, will organize a workshop to explore Smart Specialization Strategies (S3) in the Alpine Region.
The Ge.S.Di.Mont. Research Center, part of the UNIMONT centre of the University of Milan, has for years been involved in promoting scientific knowledge and disseminating good practices aimed at enhancing the agro-biodiversity of mountain areas, with particular reference to the horizons of the green economy. For this reason, Dr. Luca Giupponi, of the Ge.S.Di.Mont. research group at the UNIMONT centre of the University of Milan, will intervene at the round table “The ecological transition to face climate change: EUSALP in action for a sustainable and resilient Alpine region” of the EUSALP Annual Forum and which will be held on 14th December at 3.00 p.m.
The speech by Dr. Luca Giupponi, entitled “How to act concretely for the enhancement of mountain plant agro-biodiversity products”, aims to develop the actions that universities, companies, public and private bodies and institutions active in mountain areas can carry out in order to enhance the agri-food heritage of the Alpine Region. With the aim of offering some practical examples, some activities which are the result of the research and networking that the UNIMONT Centre of the University of Milan has promoted to characterize some traditional local resources will also be presented, such as Mais Nero Spinoso di Valle Camonica, the Copafam bean and the Siberian Wheat of Valtellina.

One of the main objectives of the European Strategy for the Alpine Region – EUSALP is to ensure that this area remains among the most attractive and competitive in Europe, making the most of resources and opportunities for sustainable and innovative development. Therefore, the workshop organized by Action Group 1 – Research & Innovation, of which Prof. Anna Giorgi – Rector’s Delegate for the promotion of teaching, research and third mission for the enhancement of the mountain territory and Director of the Research Center for the Sustainable Development of Mountains – Ge.S.Di.Mont – is the Leader on delegation of the Lombardy Region, aims to analyze the challenges related to the promotion of sustainable growth in the EUSALP area.
In particular, the workshop pays particular attention to how the specificities of Alpine territories play a fundamental role in the activation of interregional cooperation processes, regarding priorities and shared economic value chains. Smart Specialization Strategies for Research & Innovation can facilitate collaboration between the academic world and that of businesses and political decision-makers on strategic issues for the sustainable development of the region. The meeting will take place in hybrid form on December 15th at 8.30 a.m.
