Sustainable tourism for mountain areas
The course will explore, analyze and describe development trajectories, models, and existing examples from the economic, socio-cultural and natural sciences sectors in terms of how they relate to tourism. Examples come from the international level (7 countries and 48 regions of the EUSALP area). The course also aims to analyze the potential of new technologies and telematic tools for the organization and promotion of tourism activities.
The goal of the course is to provide training that will allow for the creation of new jobs in the tourist sector throughout the Alpine Macroregion. The course will be in English and is directed towards: employees in the tourism and hospitality sectors and similar professions; organizers of fairs, exhibitions and cultural events; organizers of conferences and receptions; tour operators and people in similar professions; travel agents; tourist agencies; tourist guides, for example those with expertise in the natural environment, mountain activities, culture and sports; and public administrators.

1. The perspective of universities and experts: The first module of the course will be dedicated to models and strategies for the development of sustainable tourism with a focus on economic, environmental, and social sustainability. The module will focus on the seven Alpine countries and will highlight the value of traditional tangible and intangible cultural assets in developing new tourism activities.
2. The perspective from the territory: In the second module, the course will focus on themes related to territorial organization and programming, the integrated management of tourist destinations across the territory, and funding available for development of the Alpine Macroregion. Particular attention will be paid to the development of soft skills for tourism, skills that require professional training in order to be adequately developed to address emerging and novel types of tourism
3. New models and strategies for growth in the tourism sector: The third module will present six different forms of sustainable tourism: (1) accessible tourism; (2) silver tourism;(3) experiential tourism; (4) quality tourism with a focus on well-being; (5) tourism and culture;and (6) “slow” tourism. All the topics covered will be accompanied by a presentation and comparative analysis of real case studies from the 7 countries and the 48 Regions in the Alpine Macroregion.
4. Start-ups in tourism, marketing,and communication:The fourth and final module will provide useful tools for start-ups in the tourism sector and introduce marketing and promotion techniques. Tourists today often turn to the internet to design their travel experiences. The course will therefore pay particular attention to the management of touristic offerings through social, digital, and e-commerce outlets as well as the management of touristic offerings at the national and international level.
