The University of Milan with its UNIMONT centre is taking part in Expo 2020 Dubai in the week dedicated to “climate and biodiversity”, which will see the Italian mountains at the center of a series of initiatives dedicated to skills, good practices and international innovation aimed at fostering sustainable development and the resilience of mountain communities.
Mountains cover 27% of the world’s surface, have between 60 and 80% of all freshwater resources on our planet and are biodiversity hotspots. These unique and complex territories are home to nearly 1 billion people globally and are currently feeling the effects of ongoing climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to promote new models of sustainable development for mountain areas and innovative processes that can guarantee the livelihood of local communities.
How can we make young people aware of what the mountains offer, both from an environmental point of view and in terms of sustainable social and economic opportunities? How can an educational model dedicated to mountain areas be developed, capable of empowering local communities and promoting innovative processes in the mountains? How can the enhancement of the cultural and natural heritage of the mountains be supported?
With these questions, the University of Milan with its decentralized UNIMONT Centre in Edolo entirely dedicated to the development of mountain areas, is organizing “Connecting Youth and Mountains, Creating a Lively Future”, which will take place on 8th October 2021 at Expo 2020 Dubai in two sessions.
The morning session is the last moment of the Youth4Mountains consultation which involved more than 100 young people from 28 countries around the world to create the Mountain Education and Innovation Manifesto (MEIM). The path was envisaged as a moment of training, study and debate aimed at young people from all over the world, between 16 and 29 years old, resident in mountain areas or passionate about sustainability. As part of the event on 8th October, the same young people will work together to finish drafting the Mountain Education and Innovation Manifesto (MEIM) which will be presented later. The afternoon session will be an opportunity for institutional discussion and debate on the role of research and the need to promote new models of sustainable development for mountain areas, focusing on training and the enhancement of human capital.
Furthermore, the UNIMONT Centre of the University of Milan will be the protagonist on 7th October within the international forum on the mountains “Reaching for the Stars: Sustainable and Climate Resilient Mountain Development” organized by FAO – Mountain Partnership, for which the Edolo Centre, recognized as an effective “model” and good practice for the enhancement of mountain territories, unique in Europe, has been invited to talk about its experience in the field of research, teaching and networking with the main actors and stakeholders of Italian and European mountains.
114 participants from 28 Countries

With these questions in mind, UNIMONT promotes the event “Connecting Youth and Mountains, Creating a Lively Future” which will take place on the 8th of October at Expo 2020 Dubai.
