After four challenging days for the researchers of the TREE: HERO project, the XII National Congress of the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology (SISEF) entitled “The useful science for forests: research and transfer” held in Palermo between 12th and 15th November 2019 has now finished.
The research group led by professors Gian Battista Bischetti (UNIMI-UNIMONT), Tommaso Sitzia (UNIPD) and Massimiliano Schwarz (BFH) presented the intermediate project results obtained from the processing of forest surveys conducted in the summer. In particular, Dr. Edoardo Alterio, author of the report “The influence of forest structure on root reinforcement: an alpine study experience” showed interesting relationships between some structural features of the woods, such as the dominant height and the main arboreal species of the population, with the protective function of the forest, assessed as soil reinforcement by the root system, with a view to reducing landslide risk. This work reinforces the hypothesis that silviculture – the main tool for forest management – specifically planned for each particle or wooded slope, is the key to achieving maximum efficiency not only in terms of production but also, and above all, of protection.
