The Vias Verdes Program started in 1993 as an initiative to reuse and valorize disused railway heritage to develop reuse initiatives for active and sustainable mobility and leisure. It is promoted and disseminated nationally and internationally by the Spanish Railways Foundation but is based on collaboration with the provinces and municipalities, which are responsible for the maintenance, management and promotion of the individual routes. Greenways are an ideal tool to promote a new culture of outdoor leisure and active tourism in our society. They contribute to sustainable rural development, local job creation, entrepreneurship, and the fight against depopulation in the so-called “empty or emptied” Spain.
